Who could ever imagine the disaster caused by the Earthquake, Tsunami and Reactor accident that happened in Northeast Japan ! Daily life has been totally destroyed without mercy by the power of nature and the nuclear accident. Nature showed us how powerless human beings are and what is most valuable in present life.
However, humans have lived and will continue to live with nature. Sun, moon, clouds, rain, rivers, trees, flowers and mountains talk to humans all the time but humans are too busy to listen to Nature’s message. Rabindranath Tagore, first Nobel Prize recipient from Asia, was a prophet who could communicate with Nature.
Tagore was born on 7th May, 1861 in Bengal, India. He was admired for his magnificent talent in all artistic fields - he was a poet, a novelist, an artist, musician, dramatist . Tagore was also above all a philosopher whose sensational views influenced many people. His thoughts could be summarized in his works “Live with Nature”, “Assimilation of East and West” and“Peace” and through all his messages and activities. He founded “SANTINIKETAN”as abode of peace, and Vishva Bharati was created to achieve his ideal through education. He also supported Mahatma Gandhi’s independence movement from the British governance. His songs have been selected as the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
His activity and ideals brought him in close touch with world renowned figures like Roman Roland, Einstein and others. The messages that Tagore created have cast light and spread across borders, tribes and religions.
Tagore was influenced a great deal by Japan. Japan’s art and culture fascinated him and this was strengthened through his friendship with Tenshin Okakura and he visited Japan five times between the years 1916 and 1929. He also invited many Japanese people to Santiniketan. Remarkable among them were Kampo Arai who taught fine arts to Indian artists, Shinzo Takagi as Judo teacher and Maki Hoshi as Tea ceremony and flower arrangement teacher. It should be recalled that Japan-India cultural exchange was started by Tagore.
Tagore warned Japan as Japan was copying Western culture and following militarism after the Meiji Era with the message “Escaping Asia for Europe”. The Japanese laughed to this warning at that time but history tells that his message was true with the fact that Japan did lose the war.
It is Tagore’s 150th anniversary this year. We would like to again learn his message through his woks of art and philosophy and pass it to our next generations in Japan the country that Tagore loved. We welcome you to join as a member of our circle celebrating Tagore’s 150th anniversary and also study Tagore's message for now and the future. The Program will be posted to the members.
Sincerely yours, Chairman of Tagore 150 Japan Committee, Tsutomu Kawai
